Yeah, That Didn't Happen!

I know I originally had plans to post about daily workouts for my 140.6. That didn't happen. Not sure what I was thinking!  I then thought, well I will just post about my weekly workouts. Again, that didn't happen either.  The reason why that did not happen is: I am training for an Ironman! Trying to work in training between family and work has not left me a lot of time to blog. So I am going to go high level on this post and give you some updates:

  1. I am having my biggest mileage month in August like I planned. I have 2 70+ mile rides under my belt and I am planning on the big 100 miler this weekend. I can honestly say that I have not been dead to the world after my rides, one of them even had a 2 mile run tagged on to the end of it. Knowing that I am not useless the rest of the day gives me hope. Saturday I rode 72 miles, with a 2 mile run afterwards, then Sunday I ran 8 miles and felt pretty good.
  2. Redman is not going to pass out gel packs on the bike, but they will have gel refills for flasks. I had never used a flask before, so I went and got one and I actually like it better. Now thinking back over my races, I have always brought enough gels with me that I have never had to grab any from the aid stations, so in all reality, not sure this is a big deal to me.
  3. My nutrition on the bike has been pretty good. I am using Gatorade, Power Shots gummies, Hammer gels, slat pills and mini Payday candy bars, these things are awesome!!!
  4. I do plan on walking some of the run, there is no way around it actually. I just want to make sure I am not the "Agony of Defeat" guy coming down the chute.

Now I also want to give some shoutouts!  Several of my friends finished their first Ironman this weekend in Louisville! Congrats to Shawn McKinney!!!  Congrats to Coy from First in Philly, and Congrats to Matthew Smith from Go Smitty Go! I can;t wait to read their race reports.

I also want to shout out to my bride who completed her first 10k run last week. It is her furthest run to date!!  She may be beating soon with the gains she has made with her running!

  1. Add up your calories and electrolytes for the bike. You need 350 calories per hour and if it is hot 900mg electroltyes per hour. And also be sure to replenish all water.
    You will thank me later.

  3. Run/Walking a Marathon is better for most of us mortals anyways. Just take it a mile at a time :) You've got this!

  4. Congrats to your wife that's awesome!

I followed Coy all day Sun, it was so fun!

I don't know how you have any time at all to write a blog when you are training for IM.

  5. You're one of the last ones I know to hit the starting line! I can't wait to follow along. You're right about the gels. I never took one from an aid station because I have so many packed into my box on my bike.

I need to scout your race and see what it's like! I visited the website once but didn't look at the course map yet.
