The Funk is Over!

Alright, last night I went to Plan C (see previous post) and I rode on the trainer. I rode about 40 minutes, covering 13 miles or so. Felt good too. The real test would be when the alarm goes off the next morning, would he or wouldn't he??? Hmmmmm?

I did. My alarm went off at 5:45 AM. I slapped the snooze button like it owed me money and waited 9 minutes for the next beeping and got up. I threw on my running stuff and I left the house. I went to the gym. I ran on the treadmill. It was still really dark outside and I did not want to go through all the hassles of getting everything together you need for running in the cold, so I went to the gym.

I got on the treadmill with the idea of running for 40 minutes or 4 miles, whichever was first. I admit I had no idea had this run would go down, but I was happy with my results.

Mile 1-9:46
Mile 2 -8:58
Mile 3-8:14
Mile 4-7:58- followed by a 5 minute cool down!

Not the best times to some of you, but I was very pleased. I always have this thought process that since I have not run in over a week, I might as well have taken 2 steps backwards!

Anyways, I was glad I got up and run. I told my wife, I was going to get up and leave the house in the morning, although I might be sleeping in the parking lot, but I was getting up! It really was not that bad, and I am glad I did it. Thanks for the support out there in blog-land.

As customary on Daily Trainings, I like to celebrate things with a song, so here is an oldie but a goodie (give it at least a minute OK?)

ETA: Also felt so good that I got a swim in at lunch, guess I just needed to get that one workout in after being out of it for a few days!

Dec 09, 2010

As I write this, it is 11:30 PM and I am about to go to bed. I was watching the weather awhile ago. I am debating on my morning run tomorrow. The weatherman said the low would be 22 degrees. I know I just lost a few of you, because who is their right mind would willingly go running in 22 degree weather?

Well, I guess I would, or I am planning to do it at least. I know I could easily be talked out of it also. I mean why put myself through that cold weather hitting me straight upside the face in the morning. I know I will never be on the podium or win a big race. I know there will be zero sponsors knocking down my door. I know I will be a back of the FOP as usual. My PR's are only for me, so it really doesn't matter if I finish a minute faster or a second faster in the big picture does it? My next schedules race is not until March (Germantown Half Marathon). So why do it?

Well, here is the deal. I look at these types of runs as mental toughness runs. I know my big races will be as tough mentally as they are physically. Mental toughness runs can happen anywhere and have happened on even the simplest of training runs. They are just something you have to push through. They are something that when you get finished, you know you conquered something and it is a piece of training that you can draw off of when you are hurting and tired.

So tomorrow, after the kids get to school, and I come home to change, I am going out running, God willing. I have already punked out this week on my running because it was raining and cold. (I can handle cold and I can handle rain, but never going to go out in both, no arguments). I had such a good month in November (60+ miles) that I would hate to have a major drop off of mileage. So my plan is 4 miles or so in the morning, we'll see what happens!

P.S. Please, no comments about how I could run on the treadmill AKA The dreadmill! We all know it is not the same.

ETA 12/10/09: I did get up and run this morning. 23 degrees. I managed to get in 3.2 miles...

Winter Running

I am not sure it is actually winter yet, but I have been having some great runs lately. I usually go out around 5:30 PM and do anywhere from 3.5 to 4 miles. It has been very cold lately, but it really does not bother me. I wear my ling tights, layer my shirts, gloves and a skull cap. I also wear a headlamp cause it gets dark so early. the light helps me see the cracks and bumps in the pavement, but it also helps cars see me, which is more important.

My times have been averaging just under 8 minute miles, which I am happy with because I am not really pushing it. Maybe it is because I am cold and want to get back home, I do not know. All I know is that I am feeling fast lately, and I enjoy the runs in the cold and darkness!
